SUSTAINABLE KILNS

Sanakorobà, Mali

Construction alone accounts for more than 30% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and must now be reinvented to meet new ecological, economic and societal challenges.

In order to achieve the main goal of sustainable development we conceived a set of tools and techniques composed by a press, a kiln and pellet briquettes. With our locally hand-crafted press we can produce high quality bricks made out of earthen materials and agricultural waste improved in strength and durability. We are then able to manufacture Compressed Earth Blocks and a wide variety of clay products that can be fired into highly efficient and automated temporary kilns to improve their durability. In order to move towards a circular economy we shift from traditional charcoal fuel, that increases pressure on the environment, producing pellets out of recycled agricultural waste.

The combination of these tools enables us to improve the durability of local materials, stimulating innovation and highly involving communities in the overall production and conception of their own buildings.
